            Nokia was once the leader in the mobile industry, but that did not continue. What is the Definition of Operation Management

     James’ definition of Operations Management is demonstrated in the “Burning Platform” memorandum.  James states that “Operations Management is about the management of the processes that produce or deliver goods and services.” (James, 2011)  It is precisely the management of the processes that produce and deliver Nokia cell phones that the “Burning Platform” addresses and criticizes.  Nokia’s CEO argues that the processes used to produce Nokia’s products are outdated.  For instance, he compares the production of Nokia’s cell phones to a Chinese brand of cell phone and illustrates how quickly their competitor’s factories can produce a mass quantity of cell phones, in comparison to Nokia’s factories.  Hence, because their competitor can produce their product so quickly, this also impacts the speed of delivery since they have a plethora of products that are ready to ship.  Nokia’s CEO criticizes the lackluster processes that Nokia current...

In my opinion, the CEO touched on all elements of James’ operations management. These elements are broken up into two categories (James, 2011). The first is Transforming Resources, which consists of Facilities and Staff. For instance, there were references to facilities. He talked about phones at various price points, including MeeGo and Symbian. He also referenced the element of staff, which he lambasted for their lackluster attitudes. He also blames at the feet of management, saying that they lacked leadership and accountability. The second area of resources that the CEO touched on are the transformed resources (James, 2011). These include materials (be they manufacturing, transportation, retail, and warehousing), information, and customers (James, 2011). In the internal memo titled “Burning Platform” written by Stephen Elop’s to all employees of Nokia, James’ operations management is all about management processes that produce or delivers goods and services to the market. In the article, service providers, good designs, hardware among others will run the developmental and delivery in the market.
